Step 1: Comprehensive Examination and Planning
Before proceeding with removable denture placement, dentists first conduct a thorough examination of the remaining teeth, gingival mucosa, labial and buccal areas, frenula, tongue, alveolar bone, jaws, and temporomandibular joints. Based on the patient’s oral and overall health, their preferences, and the dental lab’s capabilities, a plan is devised to determine the type of denture to be fabricated. Additionally, necessary adjustments are made to the abutment teeth.
Step 2: Impression Taking
Once the abutment teeth are appropriately prepared, impressions are taken to capture the edentulous area, abutment teeth, and the area for the denture base. These impressions are sent to the dental lab for further processing.
Step 3: Pouring and Trimming
The impressions are then poured with plaster or artificial stoneto create a model. This model is reversed, and after it sets, it is trimmed to accurately reflect the oral cavity. The denture will be constructed on this model.
Step 4: Fabricating the Clasp and Framework
The clasp and framework of the denture are made from stainless steel wire or cast metal, depending on the specific requirements of the denture.
Step 5: Arranging Artificial Teeth on the Wax Base
After completing the clasp, artificial teeth are arranged on a wax base to fill the edentulous spaces, and their shapes are carved out. This step also takes place in the dental lab.
Step 6: Processing the Denture
The denture with its wax base and model are placed in a specific flask. The wax base is then melted and washed out, replaced with plastic material. The flask is then compressed, and heat treatment is applied to allow the plastic to polymerize and set under pressure and at a specific temperature.
Step 7: Finishing and Adjusting the Denture
After heat treatment, the flask is allowed to cool naturally. Once opened, the removable denture is removed, adjusted, refined in shape, and initially polished lab technicians to ensure a perfect fit and comfort for the patient.
